This project focused on expanding an existing pavilion at Hurlburt Park in Roxbury, Connecticut, while respecting its role as a long-standing community gathering place. The goal was not only to add functional space, but to do so in a way that felt intentional, cohesive, and seamlessly integrated with the original structure. From the outset, the addition was designed to feel like it had always been part of the park.
Throughout this project, we worked closely with the Town of Roxbury to ensure the pavilion addition met both functional needs and long-term community goals. From early coordination through final construction, the collaboration was efficient, transparent, and built on mutual trust. It was a pleasure working alongside town officials and stakeholders who shared a clear vision for enhancing Hurlburt Park while respecting its existing character. Projects like this are especially rewarding, and we’re proud to have partnered with the Town of Roxbury to deliver a space the community can enjoy for years to come.
A key design challenge was incorporating the existing masonry fireplace into the new construction. Rather than treating it as a separate element, the fireplace was carefully integrated into the expanded footprint, allowing it to remain a central focal point within the pavilion. Structural framing and rooflines were thoughtfully coordinated to unify old and new, preserving the character of the original pavilion while enhancing its usability.
The addition includes a new snack shed, storage room, and public restroom facilities—significantly improving the functionality of the pavilion for events, gatherings, and everyday park use. These new spaces were designed with durability and efficiency in mind, ensuring they can withstand heavy public use while remaining easy to maintain for years to come.
To balance longevity with aesthetics, the exterior was finished with 1” x 8” TruExterior® Poly-Ash siding—chosen for its durability, resistance to moisture, and clean architectural lines. The roof was completed with asphalt shingles to match the existing structure and provide long-term weather protection, ensuring visual continuity across the entire pavilion.
Above the new addition, an unfinished upper level was framed to provide additional storage space and flexibility for future needs. By planning ahead and incorporating this space into the original build, the pavilion can adapt over time as the park’s programming and storage requirements evolve.
This pavilion addition reflects our commitment to building spaces that serve both function and community. By blending thoughtful design, durable materials, and quality craftsmanship, the finished structure enhances Hurlburt Park as a welcoming destination for residents and visitors alike—supporting gatherings, recreation, and shared experiences for many years to come.
